From youth unemployment to climate change, mental health, etc., there’s no shortage of challenges in the Arab world. Even more numerous, though, are the Arab youth who possess the passion and talent to build a more prosperous future. Bayanat Box wants to help Arab millennials become more informed, engaged, and empowered to tackle these challenges. Bayanat Box is an independent digital media platform that harnesses the power of data, design, and journalism to explain critical economic and social development issues affecting Arab millennials and their communities. Through fresh, mobile-ready, evidence-based, and visual stories in Arabic and English, we humanize hard numbers and rigorous research on complex development topics and bust myths around controversial issues. Through its content creation community and workshops, we train Arab millenials on our content production process and empower them to use it to actively engage in national policy debates and amplify their voices. Through competitions and other events, we provide them with an opportunity to develop innovative solutions to economic and social issues. Over the past two and a half years, and in partnership with multilateral, regional, and local organizations, we have shared online videos, animations, infographics and blogs with millions of Arab youth on topics ranging from youth unemployment to early childhood education to climate change, economic diversification, and public health in the Levant, the GCC, and North Africa. We launched a campaign to tackle common misconceptions around Syrian refugees and their impact on host communities in the Levant, which was one of two Arabic projects shortlisted for the Global Editors Network award in 2017. More recently, we organized a Hackathon where Lebanese youth designed innovative solutions to combat fake news. Over the course of this journey, we have managed to build an online community of around a hundred thousand young Arabs who are excited to engage in data-driven discussion on these issues. We have also tested and developed, and are continuously optimizing, an inter-disciplinary content production and dissemination process that works seamlessly across the boundaries of policy analysis, digital storytelling, design and media. We have also experimented with different monetization strategies including content creation partnerships, editorial and design service provision, and organization of competitions, trainings, and events. Our accumulated knowledge in this new field along, coupled with the innovative process developed, can be replicated within the journalism industry and other sectors to produce more value-added content, especially in Arabic.

Dawsat is a technology-enabled services company that combines advanced technology, a proven methodology and Arab culture to address the obesity and diabetes crisis facing the Arab world. Dawsat is the first wellness program based on the Arab kitchen and provides rich digital tools, in-person and online group support and an in-app social community that generates a path to wellness and healthy living. Dawsat aims to be the “go-to” resource for insurers, corporates and communities that seek to improve the health and well-being of their beneficiaries, employees and community members. Dawsat’s experience serving customers directly in a B2C model has paved the way for its transition to working directly with corporate partners to deliver reliable results via a B2B model and offering of digital-based services. Food and healthy lifestyle are deeply cultural. Literal translation is insufficient to create lifestyle change. Western nutrition tools are not able to address the obesity trend in the emerging markets and culturally tailored solutions must be developed. Dawsat aims to be a model for how to bring cutting-edge nutrition and wellness information into emerging markets, using technology, community and culture. With over 150 million Arabic-speaking Internet users, some of the highest rates of smartphone usage in the world found in the MENA region, Dawsat’s digital offering seeks to leverage increased digital access and awareness of the importance of improved health to reverse the obesity epidemic and bring wellness to the MENA region. Mas Watad, president and co-founder of Dawsat has had a lifelong obsession with making the Arab kitchen healthier. She is a registered dietician and nutrition specialist. In 2003, Mas realized the absence of a culture-specific nutritional guide to healthy eating and could not just apply existing Western nutritional tools to her community. She could not imagine getting her community to trade manakeesh or grape leaves for cottage cheese and melon. In 2003, Watad designed a numerical system of classifying foods, and named it Dawsat. The Dawsat methodology is a scientifically reliable resource on healthy living for the Arab world and an easy-to-follow program based on a personalized points-quota system. Every food is assigned a Dawsat points-value based on its ingredients and their cumulative effect on the body. Taking into account traditional Arab culture related to food, lifestyle and activity. Dawsat offers its solution via (1) a mobile App (free and paid subscription), (2) online remote groups, (3) rich content and support in social media community (Facebook, Instagram, Youtube); and (4) in-person groups. To date, over 40,000 people have lost weight with the Dawsat method. Dawsat is poised to be successful because the offering meets a current void in the market and the results (average 11% weight loss and significant weight loss maintenance) speak for themselves in impacting lives.

Inheritance laws across the Islamic world are complex and vary based on family structure, according to Faraid, and few understand how their assets will be divided after they pass away. The proposed product is a digital tool that specifically addresses the need of muslim families everywhere, particularly in APAC and MENA. Based on initial user research, for families that depend on one or two breadwinners there’s a strong need to understand what assets exist, how they would be distributed, and how assets can be invested for improved security and stability. There is a massive opportunity to improve transparency and flexibility in this process by using a digital tool that enables a user to put in a few basic details about their family and possessions, and the type of faith they follow, and make a plan for how their assets would be distributed. Description:
More than half of young Arabic-speakers struggle to reach relevant Arabic information on traditional search engines. Sejaal is an AI-enabled Arabic content platform that classifies and distributes media information in a relevant and smart manner. Our solution filters the Arabic web for quality sources of information - mainly social magazines, blogs, and newspapers – most of which they will discover. We smartly classify each website source according to relevance criteria. We curate their articles/stories by accurately tagging each article. We personably distribute them to each user. To further emphasise relevance, we enable each user to curate the information by high-fiving (feature) an article. With the amount of Arabic textual information rising rapidly (7000% growth), there is an increasing need for new smart curation and classification model that satisfies the expectations of millennials for ready-for-consumption content. With such an approach, we are changing their common perception that Arabic content is either ‘non-existent’ or ‘all poor quality’. We are specifically built for the conscious younger generation that discriminates about media content and who want to choose what is relevant for them. We serve the Arab digital millennial generation who has experienced the setbacks of the Arab Spring across the 22 Arabic-speaking countries of the MENA. That sceptical Generation Y is actively looking for information and knowledge to have more control over their economic, social, and political future. Arab Youth represent over half of internet users in the region; and are the new critical power generation to sustain new models of prosperous democracy.

“Code on the Road: Empowering Migrant Women and Girls through Business Entrepreneurship and Software Training” is a winning program designed to empower migrant and native women and girls through software and business entrepreneurship training in both Athens and Amman. Since 2011, the wars in Syria and Libya have sparked a large scale refugee crisis. In Greece, the total number of refugees is over 40,000 while in Jordan, there are over 1.5 million refugees who have fled conflict and strife. In countries like Libya, which is where we wish to scale up our operations, the civil war that followed decades of oppressive rule and isolation has killed entrepreneurship and stunted educational development in the field of STEM while also creating almost half a million internally displaced Libyans. In such a critical post-conflict condition job market integration is a crucial foundation that can have strong benefits not only for migrant women themselves but also for their children, family members and society at large. At the same time, local authorities around the world struggle with ICT skills gap and there is a sharp shortage of women with software skills. Nonetheless, women consistently receive messages both implicit and explicit that computer science and entrepreneurship is not a field for them. Our solution, with our distinguished local partners is to provide beneficiaries with a two-pronged and complementary solution: 1) Code on the Road mobile training courses in business entrepreneurship, and 2) Software and coding workshops to teach beneficiaries the basics of what they need to launch their virtual businesses. Our holistic program will be available in both Arabic and English and accessible to both native and migrant women in Benghazi, Libya to further promote integration and equality.

The Sustainable Store is an online retailer and marketplace that aims to lower the carbon footprint and waste impact of everyday consumer goods purchases by offering ecofriendly products delivered to households in a sustainable manner. From offering a varied assortment of sustainably sourced foods and household items, to providing a marketplace that gives local vendors a chance to break through global massproduced items and sell their own produce and recipes, The Sustainable Stores gives every person a chance to choose sustainable living. The products themselves are not the only merit, with plastic free packaging in reused boxes, refill options for cleaning supplies and everyday pantry staples to eliminate product packaging, pre-calculated shipping lanes with carbon efficient routes, and hybrid transportation with low fuel emissions, any shipment made by the store will be environmentally conscious. With every order delivered, our drivers also pick up any packaging waste consumers have saved up at home either to be recycled or re-used for future shipments. This concept is meant to minimize the impact of both everyday consumer good products and the way they reach households in an era of online shopping. With a climate crisis on humanity’s hands and as plastic pollution becomes a more urgent issue, if overconsumption is not moderated the planet’s resources will be depleted and excessive wastage will continue cause irreversible environmental damage. The earth needs immediate change, and every person has the social responsibility to participate in the solution. Many consumers understand the need for driving this change and want to contribute but are not sure where to start. This initiative will be ideal for them because it gives consumers the peace of mind of knowing that their everyday shopping can become more sustainable with minimal sacrifices, making sustainable living more accessible and effortless to the masses. Ultimately, conscious consumerism, the power every consumer holds in the choices they make when buying products, can be the number one solution in reducing our carbon footprint and saving the planet.

We produce relatable Mental Health content to address the Arab population via an online platform. Empower Magazine is built on the primary fundamental pillar of “Community”. Every week we host 3 community members from the Arab world, across a wide range of professions, to talk about the role that mental health plays in their lives. From music producers, talking about the vitality of emotional intelligence when working with men who showcase emotions only via art, to sexologists, who talk about the impact of mental health and sexual performance, to speaking with Dr. Mo AlSuweidan, a leading worldwide psychiatrist, on key issues in the MENA. In short, Empower Magazine aims to bring and shed light from all angles of mental health, shifting our audience's perception of mental health. Empower's work was picked up by Dr. Khalid Saeed, WHO Regional Director, World Health Organization Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean. On July 23rd we flew to attend their workshop on combating the stigma in the Middle East in Sharm El Sheikh. It's worth mentioning that Empower's personal mentor is Dr. Nasser Loza, one of the finest psychiatrists in the region, and ACH 2019’s keynote speaker on Mental Health. In September we are starting the first mental health fundraiser in Egypt, to help educate people on mental health across high schools in the country. That will be in joint collaboration with NGO, Neya, in Cairo Egypt.
